Separation of the chruch and the state is a concept whereby religious secularism is maintained with political distance between religious institutions and the government.
Under such a separation, the state does not pass laws that protect or infringe on any particular religion and operates without the interference of any religion. Similarly, religious organizations also maintain political neutrality and refrain from endorsing any political party, candidate, or policy.
Popular examples of such separation include the US and France.
